Kerouac Bobble Head Night: Lowell Spinners vs. Brooklyn Cyclones

On Tuesday 7 August, the Lowell Spinners play the Brooklyn Cyclones at LaLacheur Park in Lowell. The first 1,000 ticket holders (buy tickets online) through the gates will receive a Jack Kerouac Bobble Head. The Bobble Heads are designed to honor On the Road—featuring a bobbling thumb. These collectible items can be pre-ordered for $20, with half the proceeds to support scholarships in the UMass Lowell English Department, which is the game sponsor. To pre-order, contact jgoode@lowellspinners.com. This benefit is offered in collaboration with the Estate of Jack and Stella Kerouac and literary representative John Sampas.

It's part of the commercialisation of Jack. When the first bobblehead of Jack came out about 5 years ago it was greeted with hoots of delight by on-line Kerouac fans. Some of us looked at it with more jaundiced eye. This time a more subdued greeting, maybe the noveltie's wearing off. Like interest in the On the Road movie focusing on the lead actress we have to accept this kind of thing as part of the mass acceptance of Jack Kerouac. I started off being sniffy about it now I accept it even welcome it. 'Flesh coloured Christs that glow in the dark' - Bob Dylan

At least in this case the ones they are giving out at the ballpark are free and 50% of the money from the ones bought on the Lowell Spinners website go to a UMass scholarship fund. Kids love bobbleheads so maybe if they see the JK one on their shelves in later years they might be tempted to pick up one of his books. I hate to admit it but I bought one of the older ones on Ebay awhile back (they go for like $200 now btw) and put it on my book shelves next to a Buddha and Pieta. When someone comments, I can explain the dual religious beliefs of Jack. I don't live in Lowell so there's not exactly "mass acceptance" of Jack in these parts (Pittsburgh, PA) so anytime I can talk about Kerouac it's a good thing.
