Through visiting the significant Kerouac sites, attendees will learn of the lifelong influence of Lowell on shaping his remarkable body of work as seen in his novels, poems, journals, and letters.

Stephen Edington, author of two Kerouac-related books, “The Beat Face of God” and “Kerouac’s Nashua Connection,” will lead the May 4 tour, “Cradle to Grave: Jack Kerouac’s Lowell.” The car caravan tour will meet and start at the Kerouac exhibit in the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center at 10 a.m. and will last approximately 2-1/2 hours.

Roger Brunelle, noted historian and interpreter of Jack Kerouac’s life in Lowell, will lead the May 18 tour, “Kerouac’s Downtown Lowell,” also starting at 10 a.m. Roger is known for his in depth presentation of important Kerouac sites, combined with linguistic analysis of Kerouac’s writing style influenced by his French-Canadian origins and the French language he grew up speaking at home. Readings in French as well as English are common and dramatic in Roger’s tours. Meet at Kerouac Commemorative at Bridge and French Streets.

Kerouac tours on the first and third Saturdays at 10 a.m. are being planned for each month from May through October. Details on the future tours will be announced later. Tours cost $10 per person in a donated fee. Reservations for the first two tours are recommended and may be made by calling LCK president Mike Wurm at c.978-501-1021.

Writer/Playwright, Pat Fenton will be reading from his play “Jack’s Last Call, Say Goodbye to Kerouac”, as part of the March is Kerouac Month at the Northport Historical Society. Mr. Fenton will also discuss Kerouac’s Northport years as well as his importance to American literature.

It’s the end of summer in 1964. A major cultural shift is starting to happen in the U.S., and on his last night in Northport, Long Island the America Jack Kerouac saw through a rear view mirror riding along side his "On the Road" partner Neal Cassady is slowly playing again in his mind.

Long after a small going away party that he has thrown for himself is over; Jack keeps on drinking as he prepares to move to Florida with his mother. He reflects back on his fame, his youth as a football star in Lowell, Massachusetts, and the worry that his time has come and gone. As he sums up parts of his life to the audience in a bittersweet narrative, he receives a series of soul-searching phone calls from his daughter Jan.

An obligatory stop at Gunther’s Bar down the block on Main Street, where Jack Kerouac spent much of his Northport Years, will be made by the writer, and the conversation will continue over pints of tap beer.

The birthday celebration will take place on Sunday, March 10th at 3 P.M., at the Northport Historical Society, 215 Main Street, Northport, Long Island.

About On the Road:

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles and based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart).

Traveling cross-country, Sal and Dean venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of "it" -- the pure essence of experience.

Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women -- Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each impacting their journey indelibly.
